MAIN SUMMARY

The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury

A Martian lady dreams about a spaceship coming down from the sky with a light-skinned, blue-eyed creature named Nathaniel York. Her husband seems very exhausted. When the spaceship lands, he shoots the men inside. People on Mars start humming Earth songs and having very strange dreams. Another spaceship lands, and the astronauts come out and claim to be from Earth. But everyone thinks they're just crazy people who have hallucinated their spaceship.

Thus, a psychologist shoots all the astronauts on Mars. On Earth, a crazy taxpayer wants to join a third spaceship to Mars but is rejected. When it lands on Mars, the astronauts find themselves in a perfect small American town. They reunite with their dead family members and relatives. They split up to have dinner with their lost parents and brothers. Captain John Black goes and sleeps beside his lost brother but realizes that it might be a trap of Martians. Sadly, his "brother" kills him before he can escape from the room.

One year later, a fourth group lands on Mars and it is successful. Most Martians have become sick and died from chickenpox, apparently brought by the earlier visitors. Captain Wilder allows his crew to celebrate along with drink and dance. This angers the archaeologist, Jeff Spender in the crew. Jeff Spender has respect for all Martians. He wants the crew to be respectful towards the Martians. He loses his mind and tries to harm the crew. Captain Wilder tries to talk to him. Though sympathetic, Wilder eventually has to shoot him to avoid the possible danger from him.

People start coming to Mars. They are drawn there by the promise of jobs. Benjamin Driscoll is assigned the task of planting trees in the barren land. One morning just after the rain, he finds the transformation in the once-barren land. When he turns around, he notices a lush green landscape in his surroundings. Another settler, Toma's Gomez, has a peculiar experience. He encounters in the middle of nowhere - he meets a Martian. However, they can't touch each other, almost as if they exist in different time dimensions.

The first settlers on Mars are a bit rough. They construct small churches in little shantytowns like those in America. Occasionally, their kids explore Martian ruins, where many carcasses are still being cleared. They play songs and music using the Martain bones found there. Meanwhile, back on Earth, all the African Americans in the Southern U.S. unite together to move to Mars. During the time of the farewell parade, Mr. Teece, a prejudiced white man, attempts to hinder them. But all of the African Americans unite to settle all debts. The prejudiced man becomes too emotional and feels lost without them.

Back on Mars, a guy named William Stendahl starts building a recreation of the House of Usher. He becomes quite upset because the government banned fantasy stories. To express his inner bitterness, he invites all the key politicians behind this decision to a party, where they are systematically murdered.

Finally, Mars gets filled with older people ie. retirees. A couple longs for their deceased son. They are surprised when Tom appears on their porch. Turns out, he's a Martian who can change himself based on what people wish for. When he moves to town, many people argue over him. Each of them finds him as someone different.

Some news from Earth comes. It says that there might be a big war with atomic weapons. Sam Parkhill, who's part of Captain Wilder's group, feels too delighted about his new opening of a hot dog stand. Suddenly, Martians show up. He fights with them courageously. But eventually, they give him ownership papers for half of Mars. He becomes quite confused until he realizes that Earth is in great trouble, bursting into flames that night.

On Mars, people see and hear a message on the radio saying "Come Home." People leave, but Walter Gripp, who lives in the mountains, remains behind. He tries to find a woman for his companionship. But when he meets Genevieve Selsor, he becomes disappointed because she isn't what he expected her for.

For twenty years, Hathaway and his family lived in a small place on Mars. He has been hoping for help. Finally, a spaceship lands with Captain Wilder. He has returned after exploring Jupiter and Pluto. He's confused because Hathaway's family hasn't aged. Suddenly, Hathaway dies from a heart attack. Captain Wilder discovers that they are actually robots.

On Earth, there's an automated house that is in a dying state. Its inhabitants died in a nuclear war. The house keeps on doing chores and playing music every day. One day, a branch of a tree causes a fire in it. Meanwhile, on Mars, a family escapes the devastation of the Earth. A dad tells his sons that they're now Martians. Soon another family is coming with girls, and Dad is glad they left Earth's troubles behind.
